Fire Safety Plan

Minnesota Autism Resource Portal has shared these resources on fire safety and we believe every family can benefit from a home fire safety plan.

Fire Safety Tip #1

  • Create a fire safety plan and practice it often. This includes picking a gathering spot outside the home.

  • Designate one family member to help assist the autistic person out of the home and to a place of safety during a fire.

  • Ensure that someone stays with the individual, so they do not re-enter the home or elope from the area if they become overwhelmed with the lights, siren and unfamiliar people.

  • Spending a few minutes to create a safety plan and practicing it every month, could make all the difference in saving lives. Visit American Home Shield for more tips on Creating a Fire Safety Plan.

Fire Safety Tip #2

  • Visit the firehouse to help your or your child become more familiar with the equipment, vehicles, sights and sounds of the first responders and equipment.

  • Share information with the fire department on where the person’s room is located in the home.

  • Review the fire safety plan with them to ensure everyone is aware.

Fire Safety Tip #3

  • Create and read a social story with your family to increase awareness and discuss your fire safety plan.

  • Check out this example of a Fire Safety Social Story or create your own! https://paautism.org/resource/fire-safety-social-story/

  • It's also helpful to alert your local first responders and share information on your child that could help save them time in the event of a fire or other emergency.
